Our city

We would like to introduce our field we are sent to .

The city of Hiratsuka lies about one hour away from Tokyo,
the capital city of Japan.

It is in the middle of Kanagawa prefecture,

and the station is about ten minutes’walk from the sea shore.

On a good day you can see Mt. Fuji in the west too.
Hiratsuka is a beautiful town.
 
私たちの遣わされた街を紹介します。

日本の首都である東京から普通電車で約1時間の場所に、
私たちの遣わされた街、平塚はあります。

神奈川県のほぼ中央に位置し、
平塚駅より歩いて10分で太平洋に行くことができる海辺の街です。
また西には富士山を見ることができる、とても美しい街です。

The population of Hiratsuka is 260,000.
For your reference, that’s about the same as Greenwich or Plymouth.
The size is 70㎢,the same size as the Southern Urban Area.

If you go to Greenwich, you will find over 100 churches,
and there are about 90 churches in Plymouth.
But in Hiratsuka there are only 15 churches.
If you divide the 260,000 into 15 churches,
it comes to 17,000 people per church.
That is how many people each church must reach.
As the Christian population in Japan is less than 1 percent (0.2 percent attending in a regular basis) the churches are in great need.
Many of the churches in Hiratsuka are small
and some have no fulltime worker.

 

平塚市の人口は約26万人です。
イギリスで言えばGreenwichやPlymouthとほぼ同じ人口で、
面積はSouthend Urban Areaとほぼ同じの約70㎢です。

しかしGreenwich では100以上、Plymouthでは90近くの教会があるのに対し、
平塚市には教会が15しかありません。
26万人に対して15の教会ということは1教会が、
17,000人に重荷を持たなければならないのです。
さらに日本のクリスチャンは、人口のわずか1％にしか満たず、
働き手もとても少ないのです。

Every year in July, the “Tanabata(七夕)” festival is held in Hiratsuka city.
“Tanabata” is a Shinto (Japanese religion) festival,
where the people pray for good harvest to the ancestors.
The town will be filled with “Hukinagashi(吹き流し)”
which is believed to ward off evil spirits,
and the “Mikoshi(神輿)”a moving shrine is carried around
so that the gods may go around the festival.
The Tanabata festival of Hiratsuka is
one of the big 3 Tanabatafestivals of Japan,
and throughout the three days,
there will be over 2 millionpeople attending it.

平塚市では毎年7月に七夕祭りが行われます。
七夕とは日本古来の宗教行事で、
もともとは祖先に今年1年の豊作を祈る祭りとして行われてきたものです。
七夕祭りでは魔よけの意味のある「吹き流し」が大量に飾られ、
神社から離れて神様が祭りを巡るための乗り物「神輿」が街を歩き回ります。
平塚市の七夕祭りは日本3大七夕祭りとされ、
毎年3日間に200万人近くの人たちが訪れます。

There are also 57 Shinto shrines and 98 Buddhist temples in Hiratsuka.
One of these, the Hiratsuka Hachimangushrine has 80,000 attendants
on New Year’s Day alone.

また平塚市には毎年初詣に8万人が訪れる平塚八幡宮を合わせて、
57の神社と、98の寺があります。

"Chinowa" believed to cleans all sins of any who walk through it.

茅の輪・・この輪をくぐると犯した罪や穢れを除き取れると信じられている

"Oharai" to cleanse one from all sin, uncleanness and calamity.

お祓い・・・罪、穢れ、災いを心身から取り除くための行事

All the good luck charms are burned at the end of the year in thankfulness to the gods.

1年間祀ったお札、お守り、神棚などを1年の最後に神社で焼き、神々に感謝を捧げる行事

 

I believe this gives you the picture of how Hiratsuka and the whole of Japan is still a pagan country in deep need of more workers, witnessing our Lord Jesus Christ.
